work camps
Forced labor sites
Work camps are facilities where people live and perform labor, typically in remote locations.
The term spans a range from voluntary programs—conservation work camps, summer service projects—to coercive institutions.
In darker contexts, work camps are places of forced labor under authoritarian regimes, where prisoners or persecuted groups toil under brutal conditions: Soviet work camps in Siberia, Nazi work camps.
The euphemism can obscure atrocity.
