wooden ties
Track's timber base
Wooden ties are the horizontal beams that support railroad tracks, holding the rails at the correct distance apart.
Made from treated timber to resist rot, they rest on the gravel bed beneath the tracks.
Also called railroad ties or sleepers (British).
The old wooden ties were being replaced with concrete ones.
