A wire report is a news story distributed by a wire service—an organization like the Associated Press or Reuters that gathers news and transmits it to subscribing newspapers, broadcasters, and websites.
The term dates from when stories traveled over telegraph wires.
Wire reports provide outlets with coverage they couldn't produce themselves: The paper ran a wire report on the earthquake since they had no correspondent in the region.
