winter road
Snow-covered driving path
A winter road is a temporary road usable only when frozen ground or ice can support vehicle traffic.
Common in northern regions, these routes cross terrain impassable in warmer months—frozen lakes, rivers, muskeg, or tundra: The mining camp is accessible only by winter road from January through March.
When temperatures rise, winter roads become unusable until the next freeze.
