winter encampment
Cold-weather base camp
A winter encampment is a temporary settlement where a military force, expedition, or nomadic group stays through the cold months.
Historically, armies would halt campaigns and establish winter encampments until conditions improved for travel and combat: Washington's troops endured brutal conditions at their winter encampment in Valley Forge.
The term also applies to indigenous peoples' seasonal camps.
