white caps

Wind-whipped wave tops

White caps are the foamy crests that form on waves when wind agitates the water's surface, making the tops appear white against darker water.

Also spelled whitecaps.

The term applies to ocean waves and large bodies of water in windy conditions: The lake was choppy, with white caps as far as we could see.
