web novel
Internet-published story
A web novel is a work of fiction published primarily online, typically released in serial installments rather than as a complete book.
The format originated in East Asia—particularly China, Japan, and Korea—where platforms host millions of amateur and professional writers.
Web novels tend toward genre fiction: fantasy, romance, science fiction.
Many run to hundreds of chapters, with authors posting updates on regular schedules.
Successful web novels sometimes get adapted into print books, comics, or television series: The web novel had over a thousand chapters before it was picked up by a publisher.
