watertight compartments
Isolated flooding chambers
Watertight compartments are sealed sections of a ship's hull designed to contain flooding if the vessel is breached.
Doors and bulkheads prevent water from spreading to adjacent sections, allowing the ship to stay afloat even with damage.
The concept extends figuratively to any system of isolated units that prevent problems from spreading: He kept his work and personal life in watertight compartments.
