waterlines

Hull depth indicators

Waterlines are the lines on a ship's hull showing where the water surface meets at various loads.

A ship riding high shows one waterline; fully loaded, another.

The term extends to marks left by water at its highest level—on a bathtub, a flooded basement wall, or canyon rocks shaped by an ancient river.
