watergates

River flow controllers

Watergates are gates or sluices that control the flow of water, typically found in dams, canals, or irrigation systems.

They regulate water levels, prevent flooding, and direct water where it's needed.

The term is straightforwardly literal—gates for water.

The watergates were opened to drain the reservoir. (Capitalized Watergate refers to the 1970s political scandal.)
