water catchment
Basin for precipitation
A water catchment is an area of land where rainfall collects and drains into a common outlet—a river, lake, or reservoir.
The term also refers to systems designed to capture and store rainwater: The farm installed a water catchment to collect runoff from the barn roof.
In both senses, the emphasis is on gathering water that would otherwise disperse.
