waste sorting
Separating discarded materials
Waste sorting is the practice of separating discarded materials into categories—typically recyclables, compostables, and landfill-bound trash—before disposal.
Municipal programs often require residents to sort waste into color-coded bins, while facilities may employ workers or machines to sort materials that arrive mixed.
The goal is to divert reusable materials from landfills and enable recycling.
Our building requires waste sorting, so I keep three bins under the sink.
