volcanic caves

Underground lava passages

Volcanic caves are cavities formed by volcanic activity, most commonly lava tubes—tunnels created when the surface of a lava flow cools and hardens while molten rock continues flowing beneath, eventually draining out.

Other types form from gas bubbles, lava molds around trees, or erosion of volcanic rock.

The volcanic caves on Hawaii's Big Island attract thousands of visitors annually.
