video game adaptation
Controller-to-cinema conversion
A video game adaptation is a movie, TV series, or other media based on a video game property.
The term usually implies the source material is being translated into a different medium: The Last of Us HBO series is the most acclaimed video game adaptation yet.
Adaptations flowing the other direction—games based on films—are sometimes called tie-in games instead.
