original screenplay
Not an adaptation
An original screenplay is a script for a film written without being based on previously published or produced material—not adapted from a novel, play, earlier film, or true story.
The distinction matters primarily for awards: the Academy Awards separate original screenplay from adapted screenplay, recognizing different creative achievements.
