velvet painting
Soft fabric canvas
A velvet painting is artwork created on black velvet fabric, typically featuring bold, luminous imagery—Elvis, tigers, bullfighters, sad clowns.
The velvet absorbs light while pigments glow against the dark background.
Associated with lowbrow or kitsch art, velvet paintings became icons of 1970s decor and are now collected with ironic appreciation or genuine affection: He had a velvet painting of a matador above his couch.
