commissioned portrait
Hired artistic rendering
A commissioned portrait is a painting, photograph, or other artwork created at the request of a patron who pays for it.
The subject is typically the patron themselves, a family member, or someone the patron wishes to honor.
Unlike works artists create on their own initiative, commissioned portraits are made to order: The university commissioned a portrait of the retiring president.
The practice dates to aristocratic patronage but continues today for corporate leaders, public figures, and private clients.
