vanity presses
Pay-to-publish outfits
A vanity press is a publisher that will print a book for a fee.
The term is used pejoratively to suggest that a writer has been unable to find a traditional publisher and is willing to pay to see their work in print.
Vanity presses do not distribute the books that they publish.
In contrast, a self-publishing service does distribute and market books and is not disparaged in the same way.
