small presses
Niche book houses
Small presses are independent publishing houses that operate on a limited scale, typically producing fewer titles annually than major publishers and focusing on niche genres, literary fiction, poetry, or regional works.
They often take risks on unconventional manuscripts that larger houses won't touch: Her debut novel found a home with a small press in Portland.
The term distinguishes them from both vanity presses and the big five commercial publishers.
