ungrounding

Severing electrical safety

Ungrounding is the act of removing a grounding—typically lifting a punishment that had restricted someone's freedom or activities.

A parent who grounded a teenager might later unground them for good behavior: You're ungrounded, but don't stay out past midnight.

The word also appears in electrical and psychological contexts, meaning to disconnect from ground or to destabilize someone's sense of rootedness.
