unceded lands
Never formally relinquished
Unceded lands are territories never formally surrendered by Indigenous peoples through treaty or agreement.
The term appears most often in Canadian and Australian contexts, where activists and officials acknowledge that cities and institutions occupy land whose original inhabitants never legally transferred ownership: We gather today on the unceded lands of the Coast Salish peoples.
Such acknowledgments implicitly raise questions about sovereignty and colonial legitimacy.
