indigenous reserves
Tribal territory designations
Indigenous reserves are areas of land set aside by governments for the use and habitation of indigenous peoples.
The term carries complex connotations—reserves were often created through forced relocation and represented a fraction of ancestral territories.
In Canada, reserves are the primary designation for First Nations lands; similar arrangements exist in Australia, Brazil, and elsewhere.
The community has lived on the reserve for five generations.
