twoness

Quality of doubling

Twoness is the quality or state of being two, or of being divided into two parts.

The term appears in philosophical and theological discussions of duality—the twoness of mind and body, the twoness of good and evil.

W.E.B.

Du Bois used it to describe the double consciousness of Black Americans: One ever feels his twoness—an American, a Negro.
