turf toe

Football player's metatarsophalangeal

Turf toe is a sprain of the main joint of the big toe, caused by hyperextension—bending the toe too far back.

The injury is common in football players and other athletes who play on artificial turf, where the foot can stick while the body continues forward: He's been playing through turf toe all season.
