traumatising

Causing lasting damage

Traumatising is the British spelling of traumatizing—causing lasting psychological distress or emotional damage.

The word applies both to genuinely harmful experiences and, more loosely, to anything upsetting or uncomfortable: The documentary was traumatising to watch.

In casual speech, traumatising often appears hyperbolically: That haircut was traumatising.
