transvaluation

Inverting moral worth

Transvaluation is the reassessment and reversal of established values—declaring what was good to be bad, or what was despised to be worthy.

The term is most associated with Nietzsche, who argued that Christianity had transvalued ancient values, replacing aristocratic strength with meekness and pity.

More broadly, any radical reordering of a value system: The counterculture attempted a transvaluation of middle-class respectability.
