trances
Deep meditative absorptions
Trances is the plural of trance—a state of altered consciousness marked by reduced awareness of surroundings.
Someone in a trance may appear dazed, unresponsive, or deeply absorbed: She stared out the window, lost in one of her trances.
Trances figure in hypnosis, meditation, and spiritual practices, but the word also describes any state of abstracted focus: He works in trances, oblivious to everything around him.
