traffic circles

Circular road junctions

Traffic circles are circular intersections where vehicles travel in one direction around a central island, yielding to traffic already in the circle.

They keep traffic flowing without stops, though drivers unfamiliar with them often hesitate or exit at the wrong point.

Also called roundabouts, rotaries (New England), or circles.
