trackbacks
Cross-blog link alerts
Trackbacks are notifications sent between blogs when one links to another, alerting the original author that their post has been referenced.
The system emerged in early blogging culture as a way to facilitate conversation across sites: The post received dozens of trackbacks from other bloggers.
Trackbacks have largely been replaced by other linking mechanisms and are now associated with spam.
