top roping

Rope from above

Top roping is a climbing technique where the rope runs from the climber up through an anchor at the top of the route and back down to a belayer at the bottom.

This setup catches falls immediately, making it the safest form of roped climbing and standard for beginners: We spent the afternoon top roping at the local crag.

The verb form appears as top rope or top-rope: Let's top-rope this route before trying to lead it.
