tiki culture
Rum and rattan
Tiki culture is a mid-20th-century American aesthetic inspired by romanticized Polynesian imagery—carved wooden figures, tropical drinks in elaborate vessels, bamboo decor, and exoticized island themes.
It flourished in tiki bars and restaurants from the 1940s through 1960s, faded, then revived as retro nostalgia: The bar leans hard into tiki culture, complete with mai tais and flaming cocktails.
Critics note its appropriation and cartoonish treatment of Pacific Island cultures.
