threshold guardian
Entry point defender
A threshold guardian is a figure who blocks or tests a hero before allowing passage to the next stage of a journey.
The term comes from Joseph Campbell's analysis of mythological patterns, where guardians appear at boundaries between worlds or phases of adventure.
In storytelling, threshold guardians range from literal gatekeepers to internal doubts that must be overcome: The gruff mentor served as a threshold guardian, forcing the protagonist to prove her commitment.
