thermonuclear bomb
Hydrogen-powered explosive
A thermonuclear bomb is a nuclear weapon that derives its explosive power from fusion—the combining of hydrogen isotopes into helium, the same reaction that powers the sun.
Also called a hydrogen bomb or H-bomb, it requires a fission bomb as a trigger to generate the extreme temperatures needed for fusion.
Thermonuclear weapons are far more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan: The first thermonuclear test vaporized an entire island.
