the tube
London subway system
The tube is British slang for London's underground railway system, the oldest metro in the world.
The name comes from the cylindrical shape of the deep-level tunnels: I'll take the tube to Piccadilly.
More broadly, the tube once meant television, from the cathode ray tube in older sets: What's on the tube tonight?
