temp file

Short-lived document

A temp file is a file created by software to store data temporarily during processing, then deleted when no longer needed.

Programs use temp files to manage memory, preserve work during crashes, or hold intermediate results.

When software doesn't clean up properly, orphaned temp files accumulate and waste disk space: I cleared out the temp files to free up storage.
