tax liens
Debt secures property
A tax lien is a government's legal claim against property when the owner fails to pay taxes owed.
The lien attaches to real estate, vehicles, or other assets, preventing sale or refinancing until the debt is satisfied.
Governments may sell tax liens to investors, who then collect the debt plus interest: The county auctioned off tax liens to recover unpaid property taxes.
If the debt remains unpaid, the lienholder may eventually foreclose.
