taro leaves
Poi plant foliage
Taro leaves are the large, heart-shaped leaves of the taro plant, eaten as a vegetable in Pacific Island, Southeast Asian, and Caribbean cuisines.
They must be cooked thoroughly—raw leaves contain calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and throat.
The leaves are often simmered in coconut milk or wrapped around fillings: Hawaiian laulau uses taro leaves to steam pork and fish.
