tangled yarn
Twisted craft mess
Tangled yarn is yarn that has become knotted or snarled, forming a disordered mass that resists easy unraveling.
The phrase serves as a ready metaphor for any complicated mess—of lies, relationships, or circumstances: What a tangled yarn of half-truths and alibis.
The related expression spin a yarn means to tell a story, especially a tall tale.
