tallyman

Dock inventory keeper

A tallyman is someone who keeps count or records—originally marking tallies on a stick or board.

In British usage, a tallyman was a door-to-door seller who tracked installment payments: The tallyman came round every Friday to collect.

In shipping and logistics, a tallyman counts cargo as it's loaded or unloaded.

The word appears in the folk song "Day-O": Come, Mr. Tallyman, tally me banana.
