take one's life

Commit ultimate self-harm

To take one's life is to kill oneself—a somewhat formal or euphemistic way of describing suicide: She took her own life after years of suffering.

The phrase can also mean to kill another person when the possessive shifts: The accident took his life.

Context and pronoun usually make clear whether the death is self-inflicted or caused by external circumstances.
