superpod
Cetacean mass gathering
A superpod is an unusually large gathering of whales or dolphins, sometimes numbering in the hundreds or even thousands, that forms when multiple pods come together temporarily.
These aggregations typically occur in areas with abundant food or during social or mating events.
We spotted a superpod of orcas feeding on the herring run.
The term reflects the social nature of cetaceans, whose basic social unit is the pod.
