matriline
Mother-traced descent line
A matriline is a line of descent traced through mothers—from a person to their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and so on.
The term appears in anthropology and genetics when discussing inheritance patterns that follow the female line: Mitochondrial DNA passes down the matriline.
Compare patriline for descent through fathers.
