sumptuary
Limiting luxury consumption
Sumptuary describes laws or regulations that restrict extravagance, particularly in dress, food, or other personal expenditures.
Historically, sumptuary laws enforced class distinctions by dictating what each social rank could wear or consume: Sumptuary codes forbade merchants from wearing silk.
The word now applies broadly to any regulation of private spending or consumption.
