sulfonamides

Synthetic antibiotic class

Sulfonamides are a class of synthetic antibacterial drugs, among the first antibiotics used to treat infections in humans.

They work by interfering with bacterial metabolism, preventing bacteria from synthesizing folic acid.

Though largely replaced by newer antibiotics, sulfonamides remain useful for urinary tract infections and certain other conditions.

Some people develop allergic reactions to them.

Also called sulfa drugs.
