subcaliber
Reduced diameter ammunition
Subcaliber describes a projectile or weapon smaller than the standard bore of the firearm from which it's fired.
A subcaliber round uses an adapter or sabot to fit a larger barrel, often for cheaper training: subcaliber ammunition lets recruits practice without full-power rounds.
The term also describes training devices that simulate larger weapons at reduced cost.
