strong base
Hydroxide ion source
A strong base is a chemical compound that completely dissociates into ions when dissolved in water, releasing hydroxide ions that make the solution highly alkaline.
Sodium hydroxide (lye) and potassium hydroxide are common examples.
Strong bases react vigorously with acids and can cause severe chemical burns.
Contrasts with weak bases, which only partially dissociate.
