strike-out

Three swings, out

A strike-out in baseball occurs when a batter accumulates three strikes and is declared out, either by swinging and missing, failing to swing at a pitch in the strike zone, or hitting a foul ball on the first two strikes.

The hyphenated form typically functions as a noun or adjective: He had two strike-outs in yesterday's game.

Beyond baseball, a strike-out refers to crossing something out with a line through it, or more figuratively, a complete failure at something attempted.
