streetcar system

City rail transit

A streetcar system is a network of rail-based public transit using electric vehicles that run on tracks embedded in city streets.

Unlike subways, streetcars operate at street level alongside other traffic.

Many American cities dismantled their streetcar systems in the mid-20th century, though some have revived them: Portland's streetcar system has spurred downtown development.
