strawmanning

Attacking fake arguments

Strawmanning is the act of misrepresenting someone's argument to make it easier to attack.

Rather than addressing what a person actually said, you construct a weaker or more extreme version of their position—a "straw man"—and knock that down instead.

He kept strawmanning my position by pretending I wanted to ban all cars when I just suggested better public transit.

The term derives from the idea of a flimsy practice target made of straw, easily defeated compared to a real opponent.
