straw purchaser

Frontman for purchase

A straw purchaser buys something on behalf of someone else who cannot or should not make the purchase themselves.

The term appears most often with firearms and real estate, where the actual buyer may be legally barred from purchasing or wants to hide their involvement: He used a straw purchaser to acquire guns he couldn't legally buy.

The practice is often illegal.
